Breitling Navitimer

For 70 years, the Breitling Navitimer has been one of the world's most beloved mechanical chronographs. The Navitimer family introduces a watchmaking legend to a whole new generation.

The Navitimer collection was born in 1952 when Willy Breitling was approached by US Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and asked to create a new chronograph for its members. He decided to develop an innovative instrument that would enable pilots to perform all necessary flight calculations including average speed, distance traveled, fuel consumption, rate of climb or descent and conversion of miles to kilometers or nautical miles. This new instrument was to be worn on the wrist.

A few years later, around 1956, the Navitimer was released to the public featuring the Breitling name above a stylized winged logo. In the late 1950s, while most of the leading airlines were engaged in the race to offer transatlantic flights, the Navitimer became a mainstay in every cockpit and could be seen on the wrist of every pilot flying overseas, making Breitling the official supplier to world aviation.

The iconic watch received a style update in the early 1960s. The dial now featured contrasting subdials in white which enhanced readability, the bezel evolved from a "beaded" to a "serrated" design and the logo was updated to a twin-jet logo. This watch was now being seen everywhere- whether the wearer was on land, on the sea or in the air.

Since the beginning years of the collection, the Navitimer has been a pillar of the Breitling brand and has been fitted with the brand's most complicated and prestigious movements, including the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 in 2010 and a split-second chronograph caliber in 2017.
