The free-spirited baby boomer generation of the 1960s inspired Willy Breitling to create a watch that spoke to this audience and to improve the image of the mechanical chronograph, a watch whose popularity was on the decline. Breitling wanted this new creation to be a sportier, more contemporary version of the popular Navitimer model, and aimed to break with traditional design codes. Breitling said, "Young people won't buy the kind of watch their dad wears. They will be interested in a competition watch with special dials and push buttons. A watch that will 'impress the boys'- a watch that is both impressive and really elegant. 

In 1964, Breitling introduces the Top Time, an affordable chronograph with simple, elegant lines and exceptional quality and precision. It was the perfect piece for young men and women interested in sports and technology. The name "Top Time" is chosen to underline the modernity of the collection and the energy of the time period. To make sure it's suitable for daily adventures, the Top Time features improved water-resistance, and gave customers the choice between three different outer scales: tachymeter (for racing speeds), pulsometer (for heart rate) or decimal (for easier timekeeping). 

Keeping up with the ever-changing styles of the time, Breitling adapts various dial colors, case sizes and metal variations over the years. Today, the avant-garde designs of Top Time give Breitling a unique source of inspiration for many more cool new chronographs. Most recently, Top Time collaborated with various car manufacturers to create the B01 and B21 Ford Thunderbird, Ford Mustang, Deus, Chevrolet Corvette and Shelby Cobra.
